Differential Tuition Report

2011-2012

Texas A & M University Board of Regents approved differential tuition for the College of Architecture in May 2011;  it went into effect in the fall 2011 semester. Each student enrolled in an undergraduate program in the College Of Architecture is charged an additional $204.00 per semester in addition to the university’s standard tuition. 

The Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning (LAUP) received $58,781.00 in differential tuition during the 2011 – 2012 academic year.  The funds collected from differential tuition  were  used to create a new departmental program:PATH.  PATH has four components:

  1. Increase PLACEMENT of students after graduation 
  2. Increase ACCESS to undergraduate programs
  3. Shorten TIME TO GRADUATION
  4. Establish HIGH IMPACT EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES to enrich the quality of student’s experiences

More specifically, funds were expended in the following ways:

PLACEMENT (7.83%)

  1. Offered a new three (3) credit course on Internship Development;
  2. Delivered a new one (1) credit course on Portfolio;
  3. Increased student participation in Career Fair activities organized by the department of LAUP;

ACCESS (2.55%)

  1. Strengthen recruitment and marketing activities to increase access in terms of the quality and diversity of students in the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and BS-Urban and Regional Planning (URPN) programs;

TIME TO GRADUATION (67.05%)

  1. Increased offering of summer courses (five new online courses were developed and taught for the first time). As such, LAUP was able to offer these courses more than once a year thus shortening time to graduation;

HIGH IMPACT EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES (22.57%)

  1. Supplemented departmental funds to bring in two (2) renowned national speakers;
  2. Subsidized registration fees for students to participate in the new Imagining New Features Symposium and Workshop in November 2011;
  3. Supported two (2) new service-learning class projects;
  4. Provided partial financial support to six (6) undergraduate students to attend the national American Society of Landscape Annual meeting in San Diego in September 2011; eight (8) planning undergraduate students to attend the Texas American Planning Association meeting in Austin, TX in October 2010; and 15 (fifteen) undergraduate students to attend the Texas American Society of Landscape Annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas in April 2012;
  5. Provided financial support for field trips and site visits to professional firms;
  6. Improved space and technology through the acquisition of mobile smart board carts, flexible partitions, and studio display panels.

In conclusion, the funds generated from differential tuition enabled students to benefit from the PATH program
