Time to Degree

The core courses in theory, analytic methods and research design provide our students with the requisite knowledge and skills base to meaningfully contribute to urban and regional science at the doctoral level.

The departmental mentoring policy that requires each new student to have a mentor prior to admission. This ensures that students have at least one faculty member who shares some common interest(s). This policy together with the implementation of the emphasis areas has helped define the URSC areas in which the faculty feels they can provide meaningful insight to successfully guide dissertation research.

These policies mean that URSC students complete the core curriculum in approximately two years and take their preliminary exam usually in their third year. Students complete their dissertations thereafter with an average time to completion being five years.
